Last night I attended a class on the topic taught by Betsy Holmes, a well-researched mom and doTERRA expert. She also invited Susan Purdy, R.N. (who recently retired from OSU after 31 years) to speak on her experiences with vaccinations in a traditional medical setting. The class was so beneficial for me and I would like to highlight some of what I learned, but if you ever have an opportunity to attend one of their classes yourself, I highly recommend it! It was a two hour class and I can't possibly cover everything discussed, but here are some of the points I think will be most helpful to you.
Betsy opened with a brief introduction to the many essential oils that can serve as natural medicine. If you are unfamiliar with essential oils, visit my "Intro to Essential Oils" section. She also quickly ran through the history of vaccinations which date back to the fifth century B.C., and are an attempt to prevent or reduce illness.
One thing Betsy was very clear to highlight was the seriousness of disease, citing the smallpox epidemic that wiped out 60 million people between the late 17th and 18th centuries. This is why governments throughout the world have overseers of public health. In the U.S. we have the CDC. The World Health Organization serves international matters of public health. Here in Delaware, Ohio the health department has billboards around town encouraging exercise, healthy eating and "immunizations" (which, in my opinion, is a misnomer for vaccinations since we can still catch an illness even if we have received the vaccination for it.)
Our immune systems are complex and wonderful systems designed to keep us well. Sanitation, exercise and a healthy diet (see more about this here) give our immune systems the opportunity to function as they should. Our immune systems can also be weakened through trauma, stress, dietary changes, PH imbalance, and many other factors. When we use an essential oil we are using a plant's immune system to work with our immune system to fight or prevent illness.
What is in a vaccine? Before you or your child are vaccinated, you can read the ingredients of each vaccine on the CDC's website. On a personal note, I was pressured into getting the DTaP vaccine in the third trimester of my pregnancy and went blindly into it, despite the nagging feeling of dread in my gut. If I had read the ingredients I would not have put it into my body. Fortunately, I didn't experience any adverse side-effects, but I also use the doTERRA oils that would treat tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. Here is the list of ingredients of one version of DTAP from the CDC website:
sodium phosphate, peptone, bovine extract (U.S. sourced), formaldehyde, ammonium sulfate, aluminum potassium sulfate, thimerosal (trace), gelatin, polysorbate 80 (Tween 80), modified Mueller and Miller medium, modified Stainer-Scholte medium
This is the version commonly administered to infants and children:
aluminum phosphate, polysorbate 80, formaldehyde, gutaraldehyde, bovine serum albumin, 2-phenoxethanol, neomycin, polymyxin B sulfate, Mueller’s Growth Medium, Mueller-Miller casamino acid medium (without beef heart infusion), Stainer-Scholte medium (modified by the addition of casamino acids and dimethyl-beta-cyclodextrin), MRC-5 (human diploid) cells, CMRL 1969 medium (supplemented with calf serum).
If you aren't sure what these ingredients are, doesn't the list at least make you want to learn more?! Formaldehyde may sound familiar, and the thimerosal is one of the controversial ingredients (mercury). Some of the other additives are also neurotoxins.
On the standard vaccine schedule children will receive 115 vaccine antigens from birth to age two.
These vaccinations are not our only defense against illness. Here are some other options:
Essential oils can kill viruses and drug-resistant bacteria. They can also help our immune systems prepare to fight pathogens.
Sanitation: By keeping our hands and homes clean, we are taking one of the best measures of defense. doTERRA's Oregano is a very powerful, natural antibiotic and can kill viruses and bacteria. Plus, your body won't build a resistance to it as it can with traditional antibiotics.

Oils to use if you decide to vaccinate:
Lavender on injection site pain.

Before you vaccinate, also consider reducing toxic load by decreasing environmental toxins from conventional household cleaners, synthetic personal care products and processed foods.
My aim with this post isn't to persuade you to not vaccinate, but rather for you to take ownership of the decision through research, reading, and prayer.
